Water Security: A North Star to Global Sustainability

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered global health, economic, and social crises, clouding the sky of achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SD) adopted by the UN in 2015 to improve human lives while protecting nature. Water is essential to public health and human well-being and can crucially smooth the path of ending poverty by securing food and energy sectors. Global water security, hence, can serve as a North Star to guide policymakers through the overwhelming task of achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for SD. To quickly attain global water security while taking the accelerators of Sustainable Development Goal 6 ("Clean Water and Sanitation") into account, different water-related interventions are discussed.

Dr. Masoud Irannezhad
Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering (Water Resources)
Dr. Irannezhad is an assistant professor at the Australian University. He is a water & climate expert with more than 11 years of international research & consultancy experience on water resources engineering & management; particularly hydro-climate extremes mitigation, water supply & sewage systems and water security for sustainability. He has published 40 peer-reviewed articles in different journals (including Science) and two book chapters (including AR6, IPCC 2022, WG II, Chapter 4, Water), which have been cited more than 670 times. His current research focuses on water scarcity and security in the semi-arid and arid environments of the Arabian Peninsula.
