Engineering the Smart City: Data, AI, and the Future of Urban Infrastructure

About this Topic

This seminar explores how data, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies are transforming the way urban infrastructure is monitored, managed, and improved. It introduces the smart-city concept from an engineering perspective, highlighting how data from sensors, IoT systems, and urban platforms can support more informed and proactive decision-making. Through examples from transportation, buildings, energy, water, and infrastructure management, the talk will illustrate how data analytics and AI can help engineers move from traditional reactive approaches toward predictive, efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure systems.
The discussion will conclude with a look at the future role of engineers in increasingly data-driven cities, including the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating AI into engineering practice.
